The effect of colours

The effect of colours

KALDEWEI, Ahlen, July 2019. – Colours express personality and can improve the mood in a room. Nobody knows this  better than floral designer Ruby Barber. Her artistic floral arrangements add the finishing touches to high-end international interiors and designer fashion shoots. The artist, who works under the pseudonym of Mary Lennox, explains what’s important when it comes to choosing and combining colours and how colours can change a bathroom’s ambience.

The more powerful the colours used - the more the flowers and furnishings become visual show-stoppers. If the home owner’s favourite colour is used, these items are also a reflection of the individual’s personality. ”We usually connect our favourite colours with sensual memories, people, scents or music. Everybody feels it differently, it’s a very personal thing,” Ruby Barber says.

Every colour has its own special effect
The floral designer prefers muted, harmonious shades. “That keeps my head clear,” Ruby Barber says. “Primary colours, on the other hand, have a particularly strong emotional pull. Reds, for example, are passionate and fiery, blues are soothing and immersive, white neutralises and clarifies. Naturally, there is a wide spectrum and combination of options in between,” the 30-year-old explains, although she admits that: “Depending on the season, I like to give preference to a single colour in my floral arrangements. In spring, for example, she likes to use yellow as her base colour – in various shades all the way through to pastels. Yellow represents a new beginning, freshness and the sun,” Ruby Barber says.

Bathroom is the perfect place for colour
If there is one place where colour can achieve its full effect, it’s the bathroom: “When flowers bring colour into the bathroom, it’s a real five-star feeling,” says Ruby Barber. “It’s a huge upgrade for the place where we relax and make ourselves beautiful.” She particularly recommends colourful flowers for plain, somewhat neutral interiors with smooth surfaces. What really matters, when it comes to creating a certain mood, is the interaction of the different colours. “If you put a collection of pretty perfume bottles on display in your bathroom, or have other things on the shelves, you should go for blurry, neutral shades that harmonise with the colours of the bathroom furnishings, walls and floor. Neutral, white bouquets also fit in very well.”

Perfect interplay of colours is what counts
While neutralising, clarifying white may clear our heads, any change from classic white in the bathroom can be enriching. The elegant matt shades of the Coordinated Colours Collection open up the integrative and expressive power of colour to the viewer, whereby, there isn’t any other product that complements a bathroom more than KALDEWEI’s delicate Miena washbasin bowl, designed by Anke Salomon. Placed on a console, it works excellently as a colour harmoniser in the bathroom. Alternatively, as a Perfect Match with the colour of the bath or shower surface, it can have a positive influence on the ambience of the bathroom.
